What If God Really Comes Through?

Some steps of faith feel safe. Others feel like stepping onto water.

Giving can be one of those steps. It asks something deeply personal of us—our trust.

Before we dive into this week’s story, catch up on the journey so far:
It All Belongs to God – Kicking off the challenge with ownership and purpose
A Cheerful Heart, An Open Hand – What God really wants when we give

This week, we want to share a story of someone who said “yes” to God in a tangible way—and discovered something more than just provision.

When the Numbers Don't Add Up

One of our pastors recently shared a moment from years ago: he was sitting in church, listening to the church president share a deeply personal story.

The president and his wife were working on their family budget—but no matter how they arranged the numbers, their bills outweighed their income. At the end of their rope, they were trying to figure out what to cut.

That’s when his wife gently asked, “Why isn’t tithing in the budget?”

He replied, “There’s no way we can give right now. Eventually, but not right now.”

But she pushed back. “Let’s try making a new budget—with giving first.”

So they did. And to their amazement, the numbers worked.
It didn’t make sense mathematically—but it made sense in faith.
They trusted, and God met their daily needs.

That moment left a mark. Years later, the pastor shared:

“As life gets more expensive and kids get bigger (so do the costs!), it’s tempting to cut back on generosity—especially when the math says to. But I think of that story, and I choose to trust. Giving is one of the most tangible ways to declare that God is first. And He is trustworthy.”

A Summer of Sacrifice, A Season of Joy

One church member shared that she decided to join the Giving Challenge last year using her small personal “fun money” budget—just $150 a month, set aside for things like lunches with friends.

Instead of spending it as usual, she let her friends know: “I’m taking a summer vacation—from dining out. I’m giving instead.”

What surprised her most wasn’t what she gave up—it was the joy she discovered in reordering her priorities. Even with decades of budgeting experience and big responsibilities on her shoulders, she said this step felt freeing.

“Becoming more generous has NOT decreased our overall wealth,” she reflected.
“It has increased our joy.”

She and her husband now plan to increase their giving every year. Not out of obligation—but out of gratitude.

The Trust Behind Generosity

We don’t give because we have everything figured out.
We give because we believe God is good—and we want to participate in what He’s doing.

That kind of trust changes us. It opens our eyes, softens our grip, and reminds us that God is already writing a story bigger than our fear.

And somehow, in His faithfulness, He always shows up.

Reflection Prompt

Where is God asking you to trust Him right now?
What would it look like to say “yes” with open hands?
