A Cheerful Heart, An Open Hand

What God Really Wants

When we talk about giving, it’s easy to focus on numbers. But God’s focus has always been the heart.

The truth is, God doesn’t need our money—He already owns it all. What He invites us into is something deeper: trust, transformation, and cheerful generosity.

It's All His

“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it.”
—Psalm 24:1

We often underestimate just how countercultural—and freeing—this verse is. It opens our eyes to see everything differently.
It is all His. He redeemed it. He owns it. He rules over it. He’s got this world—and us.

And yet, most of us hold tightly to what we think is ours. We cling to our families, our resources, our sense of control. But God’s Word lovingly pries our hands open—not to take from us, but to set us free.

Open Hands Bring Peace

When our oldest daughter was a baby, she had a number of issues we didn’t fully understand. We were new parents, exhausted, and unsure what to do—especially my wife, who was home with her every day.

One afternoon, I came home from work and could immediately tell something had shifted. I asked, “How was your day?” expecting more of the same—but my wife looked peaceful.

She told me that after finally getting our daughter down for a nap, she stepped out onto the deck and prayed. Her prayer was simple:
“God, she’s Yours. You love her more than we do. Help us hold her with open hands.”

That prayer didn’t change our daughter’s situation, but it changed everything about how we carried it. There was peace. There was freedom.

We often hold tightly because we want control, security, or assurance. But everything we’ve been given—our families, our finances, our futures—ultimately belongs to Him. And that is very good news.

Cheerful, Not Compelled

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give,
not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
—2 Corinthians 9:7

This verse isn’t about pressure—it’s about posture. God isn’t looking at the size of the gift. He’s looking at the heart behind it.

Generosity is never a transaction. It’s a response to grace.

The Invitation

The 90-Day Giving Challenge is an invitation to see differently. To hold your time, your resources, and your relationships with an open hand—and to trust that God is good.

Maybe today, your prayer is simple:
“God, I recognize that all I am and all I have is Yours. I hold it with an open hand and I trust You.”

As you pray that, don’t be surprised if peace starts to follow.

Anchor Verse to Reflect On This Week
